Conference Season

April was an incredibly busy month at Soft Ride! We traveled from Lexington, Kentucky to Salido, Texas to attend conferences hosted by some of the most knowledgeable equine vets and farriers in the world.

Our team at Soft Ride has always prided ourselves on encouraging further education, research, and safe practice when it comes to hoof care. We make a constant effort to connect academic research with medical practices and horse owners. It’s always been our goal to promote learning in the farrier and veterinary communities so they can bring the best, most relevant information to the treatment of your horse. Read on for a brief overview of where we’ve been in the past month and where we’re headed next!

International Podiatry Summit
Rood and Riddle - Lexington, Kentucky

A statement from Dr. Craig Lesser in regards to the conference:
"The Rood & Riddle International Podiatry Conference held April 19-20, 2024 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington KY concluded with resounding success. Through insightful demonstrations, engaging lectures and hands-on wet labs attendees gained invaluable insights into enhancing equine podiatric care. The support of our sponsors, whose contributions and commitment to advancing equine podiatry are deeply appreciated. Thank you to our sponsors, attendees, and speakers for making the conference a huge success."

Soft Ride sponsored the welcome reception of Rood and Riddle’s Podiatry Summit. This reception allowed attending vets to spend time learning from speakers like Dr. Andrew van Eps, Dr. Scott Fleming, and Dr. Craig Lesser in a casual environment that encouraged discussion on cases and research.

Ignite for Equine Athletes : From the Ground Up Workshop
Brazos Valley Equine Hospital - Salado, Texas

The conference included talks from Kyle Kukla, Brit Conklin, Mark Ravanaugh, Mark Silverman, and many others at the top of their fields in Equine Podiatry. The event focused on preventing injuries, improving performance and career longevity, and addressing preventative care in the equine hoof.

A statement from Dr. Mark Silverman in regards to the conference:

"I recently spent a couple of days down in Salado Texas. The second “From the Ground Up” conference, offered by IGNITE for Equine Athletes, was held down there in the heart of Texas.

The conference is an excellent opportunity for veterinarians, farriers, biomechanists and footing experts to share their passion for all things foot related. Being in Texas this year, the conference offered some insight into the world of podiatry from the Western performance perspective. While the function and health of the hoof is the same throughout equine sport, the demands and requirements of the western performance horse have some unique characteristics.

The conference offers experts from around the world a chance to share ideas and experiences in a collaborative format. All of us walk away from the meeting having added something to our toolbox.

The “From the Ground Up” conference is the sort of unique educational forum that Soft Ride continues to bring to our industry and those of us that were fortunate enough to participate in the conference appreciate their continued support."
Round table discussions, wetlabs, and expert led assessments made this a great weekend of learning!

Principles of Therapeutic Farriery
Ivan’s Way farm - McDonald, Pennslyvannia

Stuart Muir Nzcef- Cjf Dipwef lead the principles of Therapeutic Farriery conference which focused on creating effective, sustainable shoeing strategies when addressing pathological shoeing as well as daily fundamental shoeing. Attendants then had the opportunity for hands-on learning and application of the SoftRider shoes to both cadaver limbs and live horses.

A statement from Stuart Muir in regards to the conference:

“There was a good attendance of farriers interested in advancing their knowledge in therapeutic shoeing. I lectured for three hours on the fundamentals of therapeutic farriery, then I demonstrated casting with the Soft Rider Max shoe. I showed both the direct method and indirect. Attendees then had the opportunity to try the product themselves while I gave them advice on the process. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to share ideas and try new applications. There was a lot of talk on the subject of the clogs and the benefits of using SoftRider shoes.”

Stuart Muir demonstrated the casting application techniques of SoftRider Max shoes before giving attendants the opportunity to master the casting process as well.
