Happy Mother’s Day

Hello!

Foaling season means all the moms are working overtime, human and equine alike! Watching little colts and fillies running circles around their moms is one of our favorite spring views. Those little ones sure are cute, even if they’re exhausting!

If your mare is rebounding from foaling, or feeling hoof-sore from carrying the extra weight of pregnancy, a pair of Soft Ride Boots or shoes might just be the Mother’s Day gift you’ve been looking for. After all, it’s the season for celebrating all the moms in our lives and everything they do for us!

When a Little Pampering is Due

Foaling season brings a spike in sore footed broodmares. Wearing Soft Ride Boots can help mares experience better mobility.

The extra weight of pregnancy, especially in mares with a history of lameness, thin soles, or laminitis, can cause inflammation and acute pain.

Soft-Ride’s raised gel orthotic insert reduces tension on the deep digital flexor tendon and cushions the hoof during impact with the ground. The rolled toe of the boot eases the breakover strain, and velcro straps allow for easy application. Using Soft Ride Comfort Boots as a preventative care measure helps reduce the chances of discomfort and injury.

Derby Weekend

Famous for its bluegrass, bourbon, and horse racing, Kentucky proudly hosts one of the most iconic sporting events in the country—the Kentucky Derby. Taking place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in Louisville, this thrilling race has earned its nickname as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” First run in 1875, the Derby is the oldest continuously held major sporting event in the U.S. and kicks off the Triple Crown series. The race covers 1¼ miles (or 10 furlongs), with top 3-year-old colts, geldings, and fillies competing for victory. On the Friday before, the Kentucky Oaks features a 1⅛-mile race exclusively for 3-year-old fillies. We’re excited to watch the 151st Run for the Roses this weekend!

Thoroughbreds and OTTBs (off-the-track thoroughbreds) benefit greatly from the support and protection offered by Soft Ride Equine Comfort Boots, especially during transportation between training facilities and racing facilities and for recovery after competitions. Designed to reduce concussion and improve circulation, these boots help ensure your horse travels comfortably and arrives in peak condition. “Spy Coast Farm interns had the opportunity to watch farrier Josh Yarber treat an outside client horse that was presented to us with a bad case of white line disease. WLD is caused by anaerobic bacteria, meaning it thrives in an environment without oxygen.

The best course of action for this horse was a hoof wall resection, so Josh opted to remove all affected areas to expose them to oxygen to prevent further spread.

Josh then selected a SoftRider Gel Max Shoe and Series 2 Cuff from Sound Horse Technology to give the horse hoof stability and mechanics. We will see her again in 6 weeks!”
